Jamaican Routes

30. Jan - 2. Mar 2016

Art from Jamaica and the Caribbean is still mostly unfamiliar to the Norwegian public, although internationally it is being “discovered”, just as contemporary Cuban, Brazilian and Colombian art already has. With her ongoing focus on Latin American and Caribbean contemporary art, and deep insight into Jamaican music, curator Selene Wendt has created Jamaican Routes ‒ an exhibition where Jamaican music, in all its breadth and complexity, plays an important role. Jamaican Routes also features artists that touch on other themes, particularly sociopolitical and identity-related issues. As a whole, Jamaican Routes gives an impression of the conceptual and formal breadth of Jamaican contemporary art, while also offering a glimpse of some of the most important social and political themes that have set their mark on Jamaican music and culture.

Artists: Camille Chedda, Andrea Chung, Marlon James, Leasho Johnson, Matthew McCarthy, Olivia McGilchrist, Ebony G. Patterson, Oneika Russell, Storm Saulter, Cosmo Whyte, Andre Woolery
