MOMENTUM: Nordic Biennale of Contemporary Art was established in 1998 and is organised and produced by Galleri F 15 in Moss, Norway. For more than two decades, MOMENTUM has supported ambitious curatorial visions while serving as a platform for experimentation with exhibition formats. Rooted in a Nordic context and shaped by an international outlook, the biennale has become an important forum for contemporary art and critical discourse.
Founded at a moment when biennials were emerging as key sites for international cultural exchange, MOMENTUM was created to strengthen the visibility of Nordic contemporary art while fostering dialogue between local, regional, and international artistic practices. From the outset, it sought not only to present exhibitions but also to explore new curatorial approaches and relationships between art, audience, and place.
Over the years, the biennale has undergone significant transformation. Early editions occupied industrial buildings and public spaces across Moss, reflecting the city’s post-industrial character and encouraging encounters between art and everyday life. Following its merger with Galleri F 15 in 2007, MOMENTUM gained a stronger institutional foundation and an expanded connection to the natural and cultural landscape of Jeløya.
Since its eleventh edition (2021), the island’s forests, coastline, agricultural landscapes, and cultural heritage have played an increasingly central role in shaping the biennale. Today, MOMENTUM continues to evolve through dialogue with artists, audiences, the local and its surroundings, using contemporary art as a catalyst for reflection, connection, and change.
