SAME POSSIBILITIES, NEW DISAPPOINTMENTS

Miriam Bäckström (Sweden, born 1967) is known and appreciated internationally. She emerged in the late 1990s as a conceptual photographer with a special interest in environments that tell their story in the absence of their inhabitants: estates of the deceased, film sets, museum displays, furnished flats. For a few years she has been working mainly with film productions and portrait images, but she has also used the book and the museum exhibition as experimental formats. Her latest works challenge conventions about the artist’s subjectivity, the documentary and the fictional (the films Rebecka, 2004, and The Viewer, 2005, and Kira Carpelan 2007, the book Anonymous Interviews, 2004).

Miriam Bäckström has participated in numerous international exhibitions and biennials, and she has also collaborated with the German artist Carsten Höller. Together they represented Sweden at the Venice Biennale in 2005 with the work Amplified Pavilion and with the book All Images of an Anonymous Person.
