Time Capsule, 2011
During Momentum 2011, a set of five time capsules were created and buried on the Alby Estate gardens outside Gallery F 15. These time capsules contain unknown works by artists that will be opened 50 years in the future. The boxes still remain buried. Rosalind Nashashibi was one the participating artists in 2011 and for Momentum10, this possible future is again remembered by her time capsule. Forty-two years still remain before the box is opened and what is inside could be related to her film practice, drawings and paintings or to the ideas she had back in 2011, thus the unknown is to be presented in a past future now.
Rosalind Nashashibi is a London-based artist working in film and painting. Her films convey inner experiences of moments and events, often considering the politics of relations in the community and the extended family; while merging everyday observations with fictional or mythological elements. Like her films, her paintings move between impressions and more concrete depiction of forms or figures, where figuration may be an imported element from another linguistic order. Nashashibi was a Turner Prize nominee in 2017, represented Scotland in the 52nd Venice Biennale, and her work has been included in Documenta 14, Manifesta 7, the Nordic Triennial, and Sharjah 10, she was the first woman to win the Beck’s Futures prize in 2003. She is a Senior Lecturer in Fine Art at Goldsmiths University.
