“NAGAVER” a performative, sonic art project by Ilavenil Vasuky Jayapalan.

Drawing inspiration from the mythical proto-Tamil Nagas, Tamil film and folk music. His first LP, “OBEY THE KING,” released by Frøya Records, represent the realities of nation-building and warfare inspired by the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam.

These are colossal pieces of music that bring you on a journey through resistance and action, destruction and sorrow, magic and transcendence and celebrations of won wars. Sonically, these materials turn into a new genre called Uruppaaddu, brought forward by Nagaver. The name is derived from the ancient indigenous practice of Uruaadal, which is ritual transcendence through sound, movement and smell.

Jayapalan was one of the exhibiting artists in the «Indoctrination: Multivalent Gestures» exhibition at Fotogalleriet in early 2023, curated by Fotogalleriet’s first Curatorial Fellow, Dahir Hussein. In 2023, Jayapalan is also nominated artist for the Europe-based photography network FUTURES.

Ilavenil Vasuky Jayapalan (b. 1991) is a transdisciplinary artist based in Oslo, Norway. The world of cinema, music and media highly inspires Jayapalans works. Often evolving around and in between the mechanisms of national consciousness, the notion of freedom, truth and desire for speculative futures depart from the contemporary fringes of society.

Jayapalan is a longtime collaborator with artists M.I.A, Christopher Kulendran Thomas and Annika Kuhlmann. His collaborative works have been shown at music festivals around the world and in institutions like ICA (UK), De Young (USA) and KW (GER). His own works have been shown at the National Museum of Art (NOR), Hulias (NOR), Fotogalleriet (NOR) and Sezon Art Gallery (JP). He is currently working towards a group show at BO (NOR) and a solo exhibition at Kunsthall Oslo (NOR).

Fotogalleriet is the first Nordic Kunsthalle dedicated solely to photography as a critical artistic practice. Since its establishment in 1977, Fotogalleriet has acted as a mediator of some of the most crucial discussions between the national and the international discourse around photography, visual culture, increased access and the social responsibility of the arts.

MOMENTUM 12 Live programme
Welcome to gather with us!

We have many live events such as dinners, discussions, workshops, etc. Our continually updated live program is on our website. We hope you take the opportunity to join the conversations arising in Momentum 12.

In the live program, we will be presenting artists working with diverse artistic practices, subject matter, and media that, in turn, encourage different types of participation.

We have also invited galleries and artist-run spaces, which are neighbors to our space in Oslo, to contribute to the live program in Moss.
